The US women win their third consecutive w 4x400m relay gold
EUGENE, Ore., July 24 – The United States won their third consecutive women’s 4x400m relay global championship on Sunday, going far clear in 3:17.79 ahead of Jamaica and Britain to complete the Eugene World Championships with a 13th home gold.
Talitha Diggs led the Americans off to a strong start, while Abby Steiner beat off Jamaican Janieve Russell in the second leg a day after helping the US win gold in the sprint relay.
Britton Wilson created much more space before the anchor. Sydney McLaughlin, who broke the 400m hurdles world record on Friday, won gold with a spectacular 47.91 final leg, finishing 20 meters ahead.
Jamaica finished considerably behind the US in 3:20.74, while Britain finished clear third in 3:22.64, continuing their impressively regular podium appearances over the previous two decades.
Allyson Felix, the track’s most decorated female athlete, did not compete in the final but won her 20th World Championship medal after a surprising comeback in the preliminary round. more info
Earlier in the competition, Felix helped the United States win bronze in the mixed relay in what was supposed to be her last worldwide event before retiring this year.
For the first time, the women’s relay was scheduled as the last track event rather than the men’s race in Eugene, where the host country ended far and out at the top of the medal table with 13 golds and a championship record of 33 overall medals.
“It’s a gift to be able to compete here. Just to finish with two gold medals for Team USA, that’s fantastic “Diggs said. “I simply wanted to offer all I had to my team, and it felt fantastic.”
Wilson stated: “It was a different atmosphere. The audience was crazy, and I knew I had to give it my all.”
McLaughlin, who has succeeded Felix as the smoothest runner on the track, characterized the night as “unreal.” “We had a very youthful crew. It was thrown together at the last minute, and I am very glad to be a part of it after such a hard college season.
“I am the oldest on the squad,” the 22-year-old said. I am overjoyed. This is Team USA’s next generation coming up to the bat. There is no better way to close the meet.”
