LONDON, 25 JULY – Foreign Secretary Liz Truss will declare on Tuesday that if she becomes Britain’s next prime minister, she would take “strong and decisive measures” to curb trade union strike action, the latest volley in a fractious battle to head the Conservative Party.

In a week when train unions are contemplating a strike over pay freezes and job losses, front-runner Truss said she would propose new legislation in her first 30 days that would ensure a minimum level of service on “important national infrastructure” and increase the minimum threshold for trade union strike ballots.

Truss is attempting to set the narrative for the leadership race against former finance minister Rishi Sunak by appealing to the Conservative Party membership, who will choose their new leader and Prime Minister on September 5.

Both candidates have leaned to the right to win over a membership that, according to one academic research, is older, male, southern English, and pro-Brexit.

Truss stated in a statement, “We need bold and immediate measures to restrict trade unions’ power to paralyze our economy.”

“I will do all in my power to ensure that aggressive trade union action no longer cripples the important services on which hardworking people depend.”

Britain risks a summer of disruption as employees throughout the sector, pressed by growing living costs, turn to strike action in wage and conditions conflicts.

Last month, train employees brought services to a halt, British attorneys engaged in criminal trials staged walkouts, and teachers and medics threatened to strike. more info

The competition began when Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced his resignation earlier this month, after a huge revolt among the party’s legislators sparked by the latest in a series of scandals that had terminally destroyed faith.
